Ok. Got itWorld-acclaimed art by Irma Stern was recently available for purchase for the first time in many years.
Irma Stern was a prolific South African artist whose work has received local and international recognition. Nedgroup Trust is proud to be administrators of the Irma Stern Trust. It is in this capacity that we have been intimately involved in giving effect to her wishes since she passed away in 1966.
Irma Stern was born in 1894 to Jewish-German parents. The family relocated to Germany in the early 1900s where Stern began her formal artistic training. On returning to South Africa in the 1920s, Stern went in search of the Africa of her childhood memories, travelling extensively throughout Africa for the rest of her life and painting expressionist portraitsof the people she encountered and became known around the world for her pioneering, modernist depictions of 20th-century African life.
In 1922, a solo exhibition of her work in Cape Town signalled the arrival of avant-garde painting in South Africa; and further exhibitions across Western Europe thrust Stern into the international spotlight. In 1927, Irma won the Prix d'Honneur at the Bordeaux International Fair and in 1929 she became the sole selector for the South African entry to the Imperial Institute Exhibition in London.
Stern’s works have repeatedly set records for South African artists at auction. Between 2000 and 2011, the record price for a painting by Stern leapt from R1,7 million to R34 million.
Nedgroup Trust’s roots go back to the first estate business founded in 1834. Nedgroup Trust Limited (previously known as BoE Trust Limited) was established in January 2003 after the merger of BoE, Syfrets Trust Ltd and Old Mutual Trust Ltd. As stipulated in her will, after her death in 1966 Stern’s estate was placed in the care of Syfrets Trust, and after the merger mentioned above, was placed in the care of our team at Nedgroup Trust. The Trustees, together with the University of Cape Town, established the Irma Stern Museum, which houses more than 100 of her oil paintings and hundreds of works on paper, letters, furniture and artefacts acquired along her many travels abroad and locally.
If you are interested in art for you personally or as an investment, please get in touch with the Trustee at Nedgroup Trust at www.irmasterntrust.org.za, to learn more about future opportunities to acquire an Irma Stern artwork.
