When markets are volatile, it’s crucial to understand sources of returns

Following a very positive July, the tide seems to have turned in both emerging and developed markets in August. In this video, Kyle Burgess, Portfolio Manager, discusses the dynamics of the markets on CNBC Africa’s Power Lunch. He highlights that locally, politics and rand volatility has been an ongoing theme for three years. This means it’s more important to determine where returns come from, rather than changing your outlook. Watch this commentary to hear his view of specific stocks and sectors, such as Naspers, FirstRand, and Exxaro.

June market overview – negative GDP growth is making rand hedges more attractive

Although local market performance has been muted for years, Kyle Burgess, Portfolio Manager, argues that there are spots of value in the market – they are just very hard to recognise. In fact, the different sectors have interchanged gains and losses over time, with industrials being the most consistent performer. He also highlights the uncertainty of the international landscape, most markedly the Brexit negotiations and UK security concerns. With the South African economy officially in recession, Kyle emphasises the attraction of rand hedges going forward.
